On ATM Fees (Rick Shaughnessy)

Beware of ATM fees.

We’ve been in Europe for a couple of weeks now. In the Netherlands, the big banks sponsor a huge national ATM network that charges 5.5% on withdrawals from non-EU accounts.

In Belgium, we used Europabank. We paid no fees to the bank or our credit union and we received a good exchange rate.

Tom additional comments from the web:

ATMs at airports and hotels often have higher fees.

Exchange rate fees at ATMs in Croatia:

Croatian ATMs may offer to display transactions in your home currency instead of Euros.

While it may seem convenient, it allows the ATM to use its own exchange rate rather than the mid-market rate, leading to hidden fees in the form of exchange rate markups. Always choose to complete ATM transactions in the local currency.

On Rocky Beaches (Lydia Grypma)

Not sure I’ve seen this tidbit in the cruise info but a friend who traveled here recently mentioned that the Adriatic beaches are quite rocky. The kind of rocks that are painful to walk in. She recommended boat/swimming shoes.

We ate at Peperoncino last night. Sea bass was great. There are multiple highly ranked(Google, etc) restaurants within 5 minutes. Peperoncino has an outdoor courtyard that is terrific for people watching.
